December 1943 / January 1944

Dearest Darling,

I received your first letter which was addressed to my new address and it sure helps out a lot when I can sit and read a sweet letter from you.

Well Darling I hope this finds you and all the rest of the folks getting along O.K. as for myself I am having trouble with my left foot swelling, I have to keep it taped up most of the time but it isn't anything to worry about.

I haven't heard from Everett (his brother) as yet but am looking for a letter from him soon.

I got a Christmas card from Gladys (his brother Harold's wife), it was one of those with the picture of her and Martha (his niece) on it.

Honey I got a card from someone in Richmond and it was signed "Your Cousin" and addressed to me at Camp Edwards and whoever it was knew I had been reduced to the grade of Private because it was addressed as Private. Do you know who it was?

Darling I hope all of you had a nice Christmas, as for myself it didn't even seem like Christmas.

Well Darling there isn't much that I can write about so I guess you understand why my letters are so short.

Darling I will close for now with lots and lots of love. Honey I sure do miss you.

Love always

After Christmas

Dearest Darling,

I received three letters from you that were sent to Camp Edwards and dated up to the 16th of December but haven't received any addressed to my new address, but after all it takes longer for my mail to reach me now.

I hope everyone had a very nice Christmas, but as for myself it didn't seem much like Christmas.

Honey I got my hair cut down to about 1/2 inch before I left Camp Edwards but it has grown out to about an inch and a half now. I wanted to have a picture taken while it was short and send it to you but couldn't find any film.

I hope you and all the rest of the folks are making out O.K. Tell Mama and Dad (Mom's parents) and also Papa (his dad) to write when ever they get a chance.

Have you gotten any of my letters from my new address. If so did you get that fur coat that I told you to get as a present from me?

I wrote to Everett (his brother) the first of last week so I should receive a letter from him in a day or so.

Well Darling there isn't but so much that I can write aabout so I guess I will have to close for now and hoping to get a letter from you tomorrow. With lots and lots of love to the sweetest girl in the world.

Goodnight Darling

Love always

December 22, 1943

Dearest Darling,

Well another day has gone by and again no letter but I guess I will get at least one tomorrow. I still haven't gotten any mail from Sister and Papa (his sister and dad) since you and I were together on Long Island. I wrote to Everett (his brother), should hear from him in a few days.

Honey ask Mama and Dad (Mom's parents) if they know Odis Young Jr., R.F.D. #3, Martinsville, VA. I found one of his dog tags on the train and thought that Mama might know him.

Honey I can't tell you where I am other than I am on the western coast and am making out O.K.

Honey tell that crazy Warren (Mom's brother) to write to me and also all the rest of the folks.

Well Honey this isn't like the times when I could come home every night but keep your chin up and we will be together again one of these days.

Honey if you can, buy some kind of Christmas present for Mama and Dad for me. I would like to get them all one but can't make it. If you still want that fur coat go ahead and get it for Christmas.

Well darling I will close for this time with lots and lots of love.

Love always
